Pet Steps

Prior to the financial crisis I built and sold pet steps. Primarily for older cats and dogs so they could continue to access their favorite spots. Here are some examples of the steps I made. Except for the cat in the first picture all of the animals are volunteers. It’s pretty amazing how people want their pets in pictures. Also, cooperation was not at the top of their list. You can’t believe how many shots it took to get what we wanted.

Very nice. I like how the steps match the rooms they are in, like another peice of furniture.

Tiffani4, all of the pictures were taken in our home and my wife made sure they matched the room (she told me what color to paint them) and she wanted them to look like a piece of furniture as opposed to an “add in”. People love their pets and want to keep the nice look of their homes.

Your wife was right! Planning on building a counter seat so my cats can lay along side of it while I’m preparing their food. So the market has dried up?

The market dried up with disposable income. Cat/dog steps are a dime a dozen unless you can find the tiny niche. Selling cat/dog steps to high end customers (that love their old pets) and still want to maintain their nice surroundings was the niche. The secret was making it look like a piece of furniture that fit in the room. That’s why everything (except the styles) was custom. Custom wood/color and custom upholstery on the steps if that’s what they wanted. This was not a business it was a hobby that allowed me to make some money on the side.

I don’t think I would do it again. High end folks are difficult to please sometimes.

They look great and I can almost understand steps to a bed or couch. I don’t get the kitchen counter though?

Our cat loves to lay in the window. Since all food prep and cooking is done on the island I didn’t really care one way or the other. Since she used to jump up on the counter and now is too old I made the steps. BTW, if you have a cat you’d probably be surprised where they go and what they do when you’re not around.

Renners, do you have a pet you consider part of the family?
