Ping Pong Ball Shooter

I made this for my nephew for his 6th birthday after I saw the shooter made by DMcKay here (

Made last minute from some cheap pine lying around. The walnut Monogram (for Matthew) with lightning bolts came about for a reason. The ‘barrel’ of the gun fit snugly into the dado of the crossbar/stand. That was BEFORE I sanded the whole thing. To ensure that it stayed together I screwed it together through the front. I couldn’t leave an exposed screw, so I carved the design into a piece of walnut to cover it up. The paint job is inspired by every boys’ favorite colors.

Disclaimer: This thing fired the ball hard as hell. I had to convince his mother and my wife that he wouldn’t shoot his brother or the dog. It shocked me how much force it generated. Guess I should’ve used smaller rubberbands.

That cools, looks like fun. The dog might be safe, but having grown up with two brothers I would bet brother becomes a target at some point!

Well how else are you gonna find out who can take more pain?

I love it. I just made my nephew a bianca cannon (hes 9). I might have to make him one of these too, along with a target.

Luckily at this point, he is too young to arm it himself. It requires an adult to pull the rubberband back and get it in the clothespin. There is that much tension.

I love the disclaimer. We are in our third year of making Ping Pong Shooters with the kids at school… probably the most popular project ever. I get the kids to tie two rubber bands together for the launch band so it’s less of a hand cannon. Of course the devious kids always figure out that one rubber band is more bang for the buck. You will be happy to know that our school teams are known as the Walnut Grove “Gators”.
