I’ve been promising my brother a mantel for a long time, and I finally got around to it. When he first moved in, there was a shelf on brackets above, but it was very ugly.
So…this is made entirely of alder with an oil based walnut stain and a few coats of lacquer. As much as I like hand tools, this was done entirely with power tools.
Comments and questions welcome.

Gorgeous stain. That looks very nice with his brick.

Thank you Katdadddy and Navyblue. I was impressed with how well it went with the stone as well. My brother just likes “dark” wood, and would probably have gone with black if I had let him, but dark walnut is a great tone. It is also the benefit of oil based stains, in my opinion – they leave a very rich, deep color.
Have your say...
