I wanted to make a surprise gift for a friend at my work. His passion outside of work is music, in much the same way that many of ours is woodworking. I checked out his music web site and saw some pictures of a Gibson Les Paul.
I printed a drawing of the guitar that I found on line, and used is as a basis for this box. I also printed my friend’s musical moniker, “mez”, from his site so that I could personalize the box.
The body is maple. The lid is maple also, but with a touch of birdseye. The “knobs” are made from birch dowels. The stub of a neck, which serves as an easy way to lift the lid, is made from bloodwood. There is dark green felt on the bottom of the cavity, but it doesn’t show up well in the photo.
The finish is Danish oil and wax. The dimensions are about 9” X 7” X 2”.
Here are some in-progress photos:

This is cool. I’m a musician and I would’ve enjoyed receiving this. I’m sure your friend will enjoy this gift very much.
Or, does already enjoy it (if you’ve already given it).

What a neat idea. I love it.
Amazing that those birch dowels came out with such contrast to the maple. End grain I guess.

Thanks for all the comments.
Steve - I tested the dowels in a piece of scrap and was also very surprised. Once I shaved off the last little bit with a sharp chisel, I could see the contrast, even without any finish on it.
I gave this to my friend this morning. It was more than worth the effort to see his reaction.
