My idea of “exotic wood”... incense cedar fence board from the big-box store! Total cost was less than a buck.

Ripped some to half thickness for the struts, and “planed” the second side also with the table-saw. Using some advice from Mathias (at woodgears.ca) my tablesaw is prediminantly loaded with a 7” skil-saw blade, a thin kerf cross cut one, does a fantastic job. Even used it to cut the tenons (no dado stack yet).

All mortice-and-tenon joinery. Finished with a couple of coats of poly.

Very nice looking piece. I love to hear these success stories of using inexpensive, easily available materials, since I live somewhere that finding most of the more desirable hardwoods can be difficult.

Just happened upon this and love it. I use the same cedar for a lot of projects. Sanded and polished up well and it looks good.

Have your say...
