I had some small bookmatched pieces of spalted maple that I was trying to find a good use for. I finally arrived at the idea of making a box in which the matching grain would travel all the way around. I made the business card holder later as an afterthought, and brought them to work as desk accessories.

Very nice desk set. How did you cut the box joints?

Thanks. The joints are half-blind dovetails made on a Porter-Cable 4212 jig.

What was the finish that gave it that showroom quality?

Watco Danish oil (natural), followed by several coats of wipe-on gloss polyurethane. They are actually a bit glossier than you can see in the photos.

Very nice desk set. I like spalted maple, well any spalted wood for that sake. You can see the spalted maple cross on the pulpit I made. It’s in one of my
projects

Beautiful? That is an understatement. Stunning. Great for an idea.

Thanks Doug. I made the box by gluing up one large panel with the bookmatched maple pieces in the center, flanked by a walnut board on each side. Then I crosscut that into four pieces to make the top, bottom, front, and back. So if you spin the box, the pattern is continuous all the way around. It was one of those ideas that just hits you out of the blue, and I think it worked well for this piece. The sides are dovetailed as you can see, and the top and bottom were just butt jointed and finished with a round over bit on the router table.

I really like the contrasting woods and especially the spalted Maple. One of my favorites even though it can be a real pain to work with because of its punky/hard personality.

Wow! I came across this box in your other post. That is a great looking little box! I like that the grain goes all the way around it in the middle. My question is, on the front the grain runs vertical where the latch is. I can’t see in the picture, but how did you make the endgrain look so nice where the lid meets the box? It looks like there isn’t any endgrain at all… It all looks great! Someday, I might be that talented…. Great job.
