Well, this being my second project, it was a challenge because I was not able to obtain plans, I had to design the dimensions myself. It is nothing special, just some pine with kreg joinery with 1/4 round edges, and 25 degree shelving to better show the cars. It’s built to hold 3 cars per shelf, so that I can expand my collection.
The project went well until finishing. I had originally stained it a light walnut, but I hated the way it came out. Apparently I probably made a bunch of rookie mistakes when it comes to staining pine, including not allowing the conditioner much more time to soak in then what is recommened on the can, and also trying to use a dark color. I researched the subject (after the fact!) and now know to use Gel stain on pine.
I decided to just paint over it in black. However, in hind sight I should have went with gloss paint instead of satin, and I really rushed the drying times yesterday, which led to some of the imperfections (white spots) you may see. Oh well, its just for the shop. A quick touch up job should remedy.
Most importantly I learned a ton and think I’m ready to attempt a working hardwoods. I have a simple tea box planned and am hoping to be able to build a nice lid with figured maple with an oil polish. I will keep you all posted.
