I wanted to upgrade my workbench with some extra bells and whistles. I had a basic workbench handed down from my father—in-law that was really great but was looking to increase the size and get more functionality out of for the space taken up in my small garage. I mounted a shop vac and cyclone dust separator into the base. The dust collection box has a see through window to see when it needs to be emptied. I intended the removable top to be adjustable but haven’t worked out the design yet. Also included pegboard as an after thought to provide more storage space front, side, and back. 2 vises pulled from the old workbench were pretty easily incorporated. The last item I included but haven’t worked out yet is a built in downdraft table. Haven’t worked out how to get good suction. Any ideas would be greatly welcomed for the adjustable top and downdraft table.

Gonna need more power than a shop vac can provide to get good suction for the down draft table. Dedicated dust collector or at least a furnace fan setup

Alexandre – The base was inspired from a project in Fine Woodworking special workbench edition from 2011. Kinda winged it from there.

As Crashn mentioned a bigger dust collector would be the ticket but that looks like a good setup so far .
I don’t like the tools and jars hanging on the peg board hooks, may cause a injury .

Great job Chief Brandon! I plan on doing something similar but use the top as a router / outfeed table. Did you notice a reduction in the vac noise when you put the unit behind pegboard? The holes should allow ventilation plus dampen the noise.

Kiefer – Thanks. I’ll look later on about upgrading. Been keeping an eye out for an old furnace fan but so far this set up has worked great for my tools at least though the downdraft is still a miss. Good point about the tools. I dont really see keeping much there, just wanted to show the concept of using all space.

Agree on the DC versus SV for downdraft table use.

The jack is for making the top adjustable. Plan on going back and finishing. I was spending way too much time trying to work out the design.
