One of the first things you’ll notice about this box is that I made a design choice to mount the quadrant hinges to the outside edge of the box so they would add visual interest. ..... Okay, I’m a terrible liar. The truth is that I think I was in a sugar-induced coma from eating too many beignets down at Cafe du Monde when I was mortising for the hinges. :-) But I had too much time invested already to scrap it, so I decided to make it a design choice.
The top is madrone burl veneer, the box itself is walnut, and the interior partitions are cherry. The finish is Watco Danish oil, followed by about 5 coats wipe-on satin poly.

I don’t believe you lied about this. A beautiful piece of craftsmanship!
Those are perfect hinges for a box like this. They’re very attractive.
I love the walnut, it looks great with that color of veneer.

Thanks!
Dick, it is kind of funny looking back now. I laid everything out so carefully, set up stop blocks on my router table, mortised both sides, top and bottom, hollowed out the necessary space for the arm of the hinge… and it wasn’t until I was testing the fit of the hinges that it hit me…”Oh no….this isn’t how it is supposed to go!” LOL!

That’s hilarious… I must be “mistake blind,” because that is one great looking box, Charlie!... I hear those beignets are good for “sugar-induced comas.”
Oh sure, put’em below me… my little picture Icon can’t reach’em… “Hon, Get out the deepfryer!”

Hi Charlie
You could of fooled me. Not ever using this type of hinge I would have thought that is the way they are mounted. If this is the kind of work you turn out when eating beignuts, you best keep eating them. Beautiful
box and great job.
God Bless

Thank you all.
Just to clarify for those not familiar with quadrant hinges, if you mount the against the inside edge of the box, they are invisiblle from the side when the box is closed. Like on this one.

Nice job, Charlie. And when you send my beignets, you don’t have to make a special box, cardboard is fine.

Looking good, Charlie. I think Karson is right on the money.
You might want to borrow my Beall (spelled it right this time) Hinge Wizard

to see if it’s worth having one of your own. It does make it easier to center the leaves on the edge of the stock.
The insert I have only works with the Non-Pareil Quads he sells, although you can get them for Brusso’s.
I’ve only done one box with them since buying the jig. If I had a second plunge router I would be using it steadily on bigger (5/8 or thicker stock) boxes, but taking the motor out of the table and going through that set up seemed a bit much and my laminate trim base is not precisely centered so it gets a a little too fiddly. I guess this means I really need two more routers – the Triton and the Bosch Colt.
What I want to know about this box is this: what is the veneer (?) on the inside of the lid. That rocks!
I like the way the cherry insert mirrors the light shade of the Madrone burl and the mitered stand is excellent as well.

Thanks, Doug. I remember discussing the Beall jig before. It is on my wish list.
Funny story about the inside of the lid. When I went to glue up the madrone veneer, I just grabbed a scrap of 1/2” birch ply I had laying around that I had used for testing stain colors when I was making my bookcase for the office. My intention was to eventually cover the inside of the box with felt, so I wasn’t worried about the stain. Turns out, as you said, it looked pretty good, so I just left it alone. By the way, the veneered ply floats in dados routed into the box sides.

That’s a fine looking box Charlie, and I agree with the others – the hinges look like they belong with that box just the way they are.
I remember seeing ‘beignet mix’ at some stores when I was down your way last month, but I had no idea what it was and didn’t ask. Rats. They look very much like a deep fried donutty type thing my wife’s German grandmother used to make. She called them ‘krepples’ and didn’t use quite so much sugar on top (although when she wasn’t looking everyone doused them anyway :-).
Cheers,
Kerry

This is nice, Charlie. I love what a simple application you gave it (paperclips and batteries!) It’s great that you actually photographed it with it’s intended cargo.

Beautiful wood and workmanship. I believed your story, should have stuck with it. I have never had the pleasure of a “beignets down at Cafe du Monde” but have seen them several times on the cooking and travel channels. I think it is pretty low of you to rub it in on those of us who are culturally challenged. The only way I can see that you can possibly make it up to us is to mail four or five to each of us for taste testing…What do you say?
Charlie, I don’t see the mistake. I guess I’m mistake blind too.
