I turned this box from a limb of black walnut that broke off of our tree from freezing rain last January. The limb was about 10” in diameter at the largest point. I rough turned the blank for the box in February and finished turned it in July.
The wood warped so bad that I didn’t have enough wood to form the lip that would suction the lid to the body so I glued three small wood blocks to the inside of the lid to keep it aligned and from falling off. It is finished with shellac inside and out.
There are still some flaws in the turning and finishing of the box but I think that this is my best piece yet. At least I really like it, not so much for the shape, but for the piece of wood. I really like the chocolate/vanilla contrast. It makes me think of ice cream, and who doesn’t like ice cream! ;)

Handsome little turned box ! I am not surprised you had a lot of warping when the wood dried. Branch wood is notorious for that and is usually not much good except for turnings !

Very nice use of the lost limb. That Walnut is just gorgeous and the variations you find in it make every project incredibly special.

Looks great. Love the Walnut grain contrast throughout the piece. Nice turning.
All the best,
Joe

Thank you to everyone! I have quite a bit more of this wood, still in the log form. I can’t wait to get some more time to turn it into something useful.

Very nice piece.
Somehow we’re going to have to train everyone that they don’t have to point out mistakes the rest of us can’t see. Keep up the good work.
