Another Mere Mortals ideal. This was a really fun project, I’m now in my 5th month of woodworking, im still a little green but was able to learn a ton with this project. Ofcourse I have to give props to Steve, wouldnt have been able to do it without his video.
Handle is made of Oak, the head is made of Walnut. Recently purchased the walnut that had been stored in a barn for 65 years, the tree was originally cut from property in South Eastern Virginia that was being flooded to make Lake Kerr around 1947. Picked up 30 planks 8 inches wide, 10 feet long, 1 inch thick for $300. Sounded like a good deal to me, however I havent purchased much rough cut lumber before, hoping someone could tell me if I came out on top with that deal.
thanks for looking !!!

Nice mallet and yes, you made out pretty good on that walnut. $1.50/bd.ft. even in the rough is pretty good I’d say. Enjoy it. Walnut is one of my favorites.

Good looking mallet, i’ve got some walnut cut offs that could be used for a similar project. Around here rough milled walnut retail for about $8.50 a board foot, so that sounds like a good deal to me.

I really like the shaping, especially how the shaft flares just before reaching the mallet heads.

Thats a nice looking mallet you made yourself there. I recently made one myself and am pretty much a newbie myself probably less experience than you from the looks of some of your other projects you have posted. I would love to get a deal like that on some nice hardwood. The only thing I have found so far in my area is red oak and poplar.

Nice mallet ! Walnut is not particularly hard so you may have to resurface it more often.

Really like your take on the handle.
I would rather the head dent than the project!
