Diesel Engine Connecting Rod Bookcase! Diesel Engine Connecting Rod Bookcase! Diesel Engine Connecting Rod Bookcase! Click the pictures to enlarge them

I got this idea from an old magazine years ago.

There are a lot of old connecting rods at the junk yards, if you want to tear an engine apart.

The Oak shelves are from some surplus shelving.

I was going to build a wooden case to use them in,

but then I remembered this article from the magazine.

One of the trucks burned out an engine that was beyond repair,

so I salvaged the connecting rods.

I cut some 1/4’’ X 1” strap into 4” lengths.

Then drilled 3/8’’ holes to match the centers on the connecting rods.

Then I welded the straps to the connecting rods

Then all I had to do is drill the boards, & bolted them all together with 3/8” carriage bolts.

This makes a very sturdy, & unique looking bookcase, & it didn’t take long for Barb to fill it with her books.

NOTE:
International DV-550B V-8 diesel. about 1975.

I think this engine was a downfall for IHC.

It had a flame hardened crankshaft, that couldn’t be reground.

I rebuilt one once, & it cost more than a buying new short block, so I just junked them after that.

I never got over 38,000 miles on one. I called it a throwaway engine.

They now have a 6 cylinder that’s very good.

Dick,

I can count on you to come up with something innovative like this. This is certainly a classic example of thinking outside the bookcase (or box if you prefer). Very nice. I can honestly say I have never seen anything like this. I wonder how many miles your are going to get out of this one? :)

Nice post and great project.

This would have gone great with my airplane engine cylinder lamp. I knew I shouldn’t have let the wife talk me into putting it in the garage sale. This would have opened up a whole new decor for the house. :[

Clever use of those old con rods Dick & a bit of nostalgia to boot.
