I made this “treasure box” for my wife our first Christmas together. We had only been dating like four months but I knew she was the one so I wanted to give her something special. This was the first time I worked with inlay and I have not done it since. Not because I did not enjoy it but because I had more time then as a college student home for Christmas.

The box is of walnut with maple and ebony inlay. The sides and top are from one length of walnut which I used because I was particularly fond of the grain pattern. Walnut is also my favorite medium because of the smell. Call me crazy but I love the smell of walnut being milled.

You can see in the open cover a picture of my wife and I on one of our first dates. We went to the park and climbed a tree. She looks at this picture and jokingly refers to us as tree huggers.

-- You know that guy who created trees? His kid was a carpenter. Go figure.

You do realize she was probably going to dump you until she saw that box? That’s enough to change anybody’s mind!
