Custom Wood Plantation Shutters

I recently built a set of custom wood plantation shutters for my woodshop. I used Rockler’s new shutter building system and it was great! The project was fairly straight forward and I’d say anyone with intermediate woodworking skills can handle it.

Rockler has online software that creates shop drawings from your field measurements. They sell the jigs and also louvers. You supply the wood for the frames and control arms.

I built a pair of shutters in about 6 hours from start to finish.

Those are seriously cool and something I aspire to make, although I’ll never be able to afford the jig.

It was a fun project. If you ever need to build a bunch of them the jig ends up being reasonably priced.

I purchased the jig several months ago and haven’t gotten around to building any shutters. I plan on making several shutters for my home and also for sale to customers so I fell like the cost is low compaire to having buy them.
A friend of mine spent over three thousand dollars in shutters based on the same style as these.

Do you have the option of making the louvers yourself in case you want to use a species they don’t offer?

@saranss – They sell a router/shaper bit you could use to make your own. The only wood they sell is Basswood. Great question!
