An art deco style box for my nephew’s wedding. I made this out of quilted maple (front, back and sides) and curly cherry (top and bottom).
After deciding on the overall outside dimension I wanted, I made decisions along the way. The idea of the cherry corners came after I mitered and glued up, then decided the box was too “stiff” looking. Using the cherry, rounded over did the trick.
The handle was my design (after lots of trial and error!) and cut free hand. I played with it until I felt it “balanced” the box.
The final version got a 1” X 6” plaque with the bride & groom’s name and date. On the inside of the lid, a smaller plaque with our name to cover the screw that holds the handle on.

You’re right. I realized that the figuring in that board was really something special when I picked it out. It made the project a no brainer. Sometimes a little luck goes a long way!!

Have your say...
