This is the brother of the “Orb” that I posted a couple months ago… this project is similar in that it is a construct of 4 half-bowls, but it is “inside out” relative to the other “Orb”. Both projects are the simple cousins of my Wavy Ribbon and Bowly Mobius projects.

This is made of poplar.

Thanks for the comments. I should probably repeat my credit to Malcom Tibbetts, a renowned wood turner who came up with the concept of making ‘ribbon’ constructs from parts of bowls… I learned how he cut pieces using miter saw or table saw, then glued them up and turned bowls on his lathe, then cut them apart on his band saw and constructed the parts into ribbon projects. I learned his methods in an article, a book and a video that he published. I didn’t use those tools… I did all cuts on the scroll saw. In order to avoid using the band saw to cut the bowls apart, I made half-bowls and quarter-bowls using a modified “bowl from a board” method and a modified circle cutting jig.

I’ll be at the North Easter Ohio Scrollers (NEOS) Picnic next weekend (May 17, 18, 19) giving 2 classes on how I made this project and the Wavy Ribbon project using the scroll saw. This year it is in Cuyahoga Falls, OH at the Quirk Center on Saturday and Sunday. I hope to meet some of you there!
