Spalted wood always makes me smile. How can something so close to being dirt be so cool?

Any how, I got in a little over my head on this one. Its about 12 inches high and nine inches wide at is widest, and the sidewalls are right at 3/8. This wood was very punky and hard to finish. took several coats of sanding sealer and nearly as many coats of wipe on poly to bring out any kind of shine. All the work was worth it. Came out to be a really nice piece of glorified dirt.

Good job on some tricky wood. Spalting certainly is a double-edged sword but if the wood isn’t too far gone it sure is beautiful !

You may have started out over your head but you recovered in a spectacular fashion. Well done. Beautiful piece.

I love it, very nice, the spalted is just right and the shape of it is nice too. I just turned a piece of Holly that was about 1/4 spalted, it was a hidden surprise.

I think you did a wonderful job my friend. I just hope someday I will have a lathe big enough to make something like that.

Thank you for showing

Yeah, whoever would have called that “firewood” couldn’t see a diamond in the raw. Very nice flower vase :)
