Here is my walnut knife block I based on plans from Popular Woodworking. It’s made from walnut my grandpa cut down and had milled. I finished it with a coat of boiled linseed oil and 3 coats of garnet shellac. After the shellac I wet sanded with 600 grit and then gave it a coat of wax. I used 1300 bamboo skewers. I also added some rubber feet to keep the wood off the counter surface.

NedB: they are $0.97 for a pack of 100 from Walmart, I just taped them in bundles of 100 and then cut them to length with a handsaw.
