Rick was in the building mood this weekend and so I put my wish list in and we made a couple waste bins out of the pine boards we got a couple weeks ago.
The bins are nothing fancy, just the way I like it, and will probably get all distorted because they are fresh boards, but that will just add to my love affair with them :)

The first bin was created using the rough edges/bark as the main focus of the design. The one element that I wanted in this bin was that the flip lid sat way above the plastic garbage bin inside it. The hinges are some from an old sewing machine cabinet that I had and took apart many years ago -but I had saved the hinges, for who knows what. I think they work just fine on this.

The second bin was created based on the number of faces that we saw in one board—around the outside is a daschund dog, an “ET”, and 2 sloths (from the movie Ice Age). The lid has the cat/owl keeping an eye on what goes in the bin.
The slot in the top of this bin is 1) for easy disposal of small items, and 2) to grab hold of to lift the entire lid off. To keep the lid on, and to hold the garbage bags (in theory) we put 4 dowels in the top sides of the bin and then matching holes in the underside of the lid. It works.

Production: I did the designing; Rick did the cutting and drilling of the pine boards and I put in the metal dowels. I also gave the edges a light sanding – didn’t want hands to get too many slivers.

The lid of the second bin did get a quick sanding because hands would be tossing garbage into the hole and I didnt want any scratches. I then put a little coating of finishing oil on the top just to see what it would look like.

And if they don’t work out you can always turn them outside – in. :>)

it’s official, you’re a freak. (I was called that in church one time when I turned the offering box around so the “front” would show). Now, this is my prediction: You’re going to go see the Hand-made- hinges that Don put on one of his boxes and tell yourself that they arent that hard to make. Then you’re going to have sleepless nights trying to figure out the easiest way to make several of them at a time and then everything that you make with hinges is going to have a “Barton” Hinge. (kinda like the phillips joint and the terdy lamp)

hahaha Obi… I’ve already thought “that doesn’t look THAT hard” hahah but I have yet to make a little box so I don’t have to have sleepless nights yet. Maybe I’d better go back to bed and store up on some sleep..

Im not talking about for the little box, Debbie, I’m talking about bigger hinges for the trash can.

oh sure .. now you did it !!!
Switched the wooden hinge from the “little” vision to the “big” vision…..
who needs sleep, anyway.

Sleep is over rated, but you’ve watched the woodworking Channel… “Never work when you’re tired or distracted … that’s it for now, enjoy the show.”

I like the idea of making the hole dual purpose ( to lift the lid and dispose of smaller items without taking the lid off). You could have used some pine around the top that would have slid around the outside of your box and it would have pinched the garbage bag between it instead of the dowels. I’m with Obi… time to make some wooden hinges on your next one.

If I’m picturing your suggestion correctly I had thought of that as well.
Originally I had wanted the dowels to hold the handles of grocery bags so I could reuse those bags instead of buying garbage bags, but as I grew to love the bin I knew that it would get lots of stuff thrown into it and so the garbage bag was added instead of the grocery bags.
If I find that I need yet another garbage bin I’ll re-consider the outside edge idea AND briefly consider wooden hinges hahaa

Or maybe both, Debbie. Have the lid pinch the larger 13 gallon trash bag and have the dowels hold the smaller shopping bags, and that way when something of oder is thrown in the smaller bag, you can wwrap it uptighter and tie it off so you dont have to empty the trash til it is actually full.

good idea Obi
and if I put 3 units in it, I can separate the smelly, from the recycling, from the garbage!!
That would work, 3 holes in the top.. It’s getting pretty big though, but definitely functional.

Thanks :)

The bins look lovely and smell so nice.. :)
I’m going to add a hole in the top of the first bin as well. I really like it in the 2nd one.. just drop something in as walking by—and it’s hands free: no lid lifting.
