it’s official, you’re a freak. (I was called that in church one time when I turned the offering box around so the “front” would show). Now, this is my prediction: You’re going to go see the Hand-made- hinges that Don put on one of his boxes and tell yourself that they arent that hard to make. Then you’re going to have sleepless nights trying to figure out the easiest way to make several of them at a time and then everything that you make with hinges is going to have a “Barton” Hinge. (kinda like the phillips joint and the terdy lamp)

I like the idea of making the hole dual purpose ( to lift the lid and dispose of smaller items without taking the lid off). You could have used some pine around the top that would have slid around the outside of your box and it would have pinched the garbage bag between it instead of the dowels. I’m with Obi… time to make some wooden hinges on your next one.

If I’m picturing your suggestion correctly I had thought of that as well.
Originally I had wanted the dowels to hold the handles of grocery bags so I could reuse those bags instead of buying garbage bags, but as I grew to love the bin I knew that it would get lots of stuff thrown into it and so the garbage bag was added instead of the grocery bags.
If I find that I need yet another garbage bin I’ll re-consider the outside edge idea AND briefly consider wooden hinges hahaa

Or maybe both, Debbie. Have the lid pinch the larger 13 gallon trash bag and have the dowels hold the smaller shopping bags, and that way when something of oder is thrown in the smaller bag, you can wwrap it uptighter and tie it off so you dont have to empty the trash til it is actually full.

and if I put 3 units in it, I can separate the smelly, from the recycling, from the garbage!!
That would work, 3 holes in the top.. It’s getting pretty big though, but definitely functional.

The bins look lovely and smell so nice.. :)
I’m going to add a hole in the top of the first bin as well. I really like it in the 2nd one.. just drop something in as walking by—and it’s hands free: no lid lifting.
