The relief hole is drilled to keep the bottom from splitting off, which can happen even with the pressure point at the contact point.
Are you planning on gluing leather pressure pads on the ends to protect the work?

The lamination negates the need for the relief hole. There is no grain for the pressure to transfer to. It is taken away when the three pieces were assembled. The travel of the active panel is only 3/8-1/2”
