Here was one of my first projects. The finish is probably one of my poorest but the wood was not the most beautiful anyway. I think they are a mix of poplar, pine and hackberry. Drawers use box joints with a wooden center rail that is the shape of a “T”. The joints are all mortise and tenon and the back looks similar to the side except for a horizontal divider separating the upper and lower 1/4” plywood panels. The divider gave me a attachment point for the drawer rail. I used Minwax Polyshades red mahogany. I made two and they have been much enjoyed. I think they would also make excellent end tables and the drawers are sized just large enough to accept a magazine. I am thinking of building more of these but this time I will use better material as I have came a long way in a few years of practice. Overall size is 13.5×16.5×26”. Legs were simple 1.5×1.5 poplar that came from a home improvement store. Most likely cost me about three times what they were worth.

This is a nice project. You blended the woods well. You are right about the cost of the wood. You are much better off getting it from a sawmill or lumber supplier even if you need to have it straight-lined and planed as opposed to buying it from one of the home improvement centers.
You did a good job with this piece.

I really like the color. I made an end table out of walnut and used red mahogany, it wasn’t quite that red but just about. I think you did an outstanding job. Kudos. mike
