As my first big piece of furniture, I decided to copy this design for a bed:
http://www.dwr.com/product/matera-bed-queen.do
There are a few small differences. Not having the exact dimensions for anything but the h-w-d meant I had to guess everything else from the pictures, but I didn’t want to copy it exactly anyway. There were some design details I went without or modified, such as the depth of the rail bevels and platform (in order to support a thicker mattress). Also, the one at DWR is made with manufactured wood covered in walnut veneer for the wide pieces, with dimensional lumber for the rest. I used solid walnut throughout to make repairs in the future less problematic.
I’ll probably knock back the finish (shellac followed by waterlox original) in the future to make it less glossy.

The walnut is just beautiful. The design appears to be from the 1960’s. I geuss if you wait long enough it does come back in style. I agree with you, I think it would look better with the shine knocked down. It would give it a more organic look. Nice job.

I love it! Amusingly, I have bookmarked this exact same bed and put it on my to-do list a few weeks ago. I’m in love with the style. I think you did a fantastic job with it.

Fantastic! I’m hoping to make a bed soon, and there is some fantatic inspiration here on Lumberjocks. I think the finish looks great as it is. I especially like the joinery where the upright posts meet the horizontal member of the headboard. I’ve set myself the seemingly impossible task of creating a bed without using glue, nor screws (for easy assembly and disassembly), so I think I may steal this idea, but instead of parallel joints, I might incorporate a dovetail…

Hi, I have looked high and low for alternatives to this bed, I’m obsessed with it and nothing comes close. Would you be interested in making one for payment?! Aside from the somewhat over the top pricetag that it comes with from DWR, I really can’t reconcile paying 5k for a bed that isn’t even solid wood. Yours, however is and is absolutely beautiful.

Thank you for the compliment. I just build as a hobby and the bed took me about 9 months in my free time, I’m about to have a lot less free time, and so I really would be the worst person to build another.
I do have sketch-up plans made up, so if you find someone who can build it for you (might want to inquire with furniture makers), I’d be happy to pass those on and explain some of the details to that person. Keep in mind that finding a price lower than 5k might be a challenge for a non-production piece of furniture, as this is about $500-700 worth of wood by itself. Though, it should last a lifetime.

Hi there, thank you for your fast response! If you’re able to send me your plans that would be AMAZING! I may have found a local carpenter here who can do it. I’m aware it may end up being the same price, but I feel if I’m going to drop 5k on a bed (gulp) it should be solid wood not veneer.
I’m not sure how you send me the plans or how you can email me directly?

Awesome looking bed. I think I’m going to have to adapt some ideas to (finally) make a headboard for my bed. Do you have any plans for what you build by chance?

Hi DancesWithBeers, this bed looks amazing! I’m also looking into finding a local carpenter to build something similar. Would you be willing to share your written plans with me?
Ideally, I’d like to have one made with drawers (makes project harder) and without a headboard (makes project a bit easier, I think).
Thank you, your work is gorgeous!!
