This is another new creation that just same to me as I went along and am happy with the results only would have been best on a different block of wood. I’m not real sure what kind of wood this is as I grabbed the logs from a neighborhood yard while tree trimmer’s were cutting down trees, I’m guessing it’s red ash, after I got it home late last year, I put it under black plastic in a bed of spalted sawdust for about 4 – 5 months but I think I cooked it a bit to long as when I started working the project the white rot had taken it’s toll making the wood porous and very soft, but I was to far into the project to stop, I had to make a few repairs but all-in-all it came out pretty good, it has 4 drawers with on hidden making it 5 drawers total.

I had someone on facebook mention it reminded her of a totem and I have to agree it has given me much inspiration to do more in this design.

Nice job, Blackie. I like the subtle inference of human head- not too much and not too little. You could play with it either more or less overt.

Another way cool “Blackie” box. I’m getting to where I recognize your stuff. I don’t know what that wood is either but it didn’t develop the black spalting like other woods. As I think about it, I’ve only seen spalting in lighter colored woods or sapwood. Curious huh?

Yea Andy the wood didn’t reveal itself when I picked it up as it was already blackened on the cut ends but it did seem to take a different color aside the white rot, thanks both of you.

Blackie,

This is fun. Your spirit of play seems to show through in this piece. It vaguely reminds me of those masonry face parts you can attach to a tree. Looks like a rough piece of wood to finish and work with, but you did a great job and that adds to the charm. This project was interesting to see and think about. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Great design and Great looking box Blackie. I took about 16 mini band saw boxes into town today and the Galleries bought all but 3 of them. Building these things sure are fun isn’t it….of course selling some is nice as well.

Donna I have several of them posted under my projects. But your correct, I have not posted all of them. I did a line of about 14 different designs scaled down to the size of a dollar bill….these were copies from the larger boxes I have been building. I was surprised they were accepted as well as they were.

Somehow I missed your boxes Hawaiilad. I’ll make you a buddy so it won’t happen again. Like others who commented, I like your original boxes best of all. The turtle is especially nice. Like I have said time and again- if you can think of a design you can render it into a band saw box.
