Which do you like better?

There are two versions of this cutting of my grandaugther in her “Tiki” dance costume. The left one is on plain soft maple, the right one is on tiger maple. My wife prefers the plain maple one because “the business of the wood detracts from the cutting”. I prefer the tiger maple one because: first I think the tiger maple adds to the motif of the portrait, and second, I love the wood. I am asking you which you like better – don’t worry, I haven’t told her I am soliciting anyone and, if I win, I probably won’t tell her.

The other pictures are of the photo that I made the template from and details of the eyes and feathers, which were a bit of a feat.

Thanks for your comments.

I like the tiger maple because the wood is lighter in color and the “portrait” stands out more…..at least it does to me.

You did a GREAT job on this. Very very good!

Sorry, I agree with your wife. But awesome job on the portrait.

I love both of these – I have to say you NAILED the pattern!

If I had to pick I would choose the soft maple as it is the more plain of the two. With this type of cutting you don’t want to be drawn to the wood when the pattern is what you want the viewer to see.

That’s my 2 cents, for what it’s worth. :-)

Great job!!!

I like the one on the right, has a little more character it looks like.

+1 what KnotCurser said, and for the same reasons. You saved me some typing too.

soft maple on the left is my favorite. The portrait stands out better, less busy looking than the tiger maple on the right

I like the tiger maple, but that may be because I like the board better. Either way, they both look Great. You did an amazing job on them!

Great job on creating the pattern.

Sorry, but I like the plain maple better. The tiger is a bit to distracting.
Also the the face on the right, to me, seems to look a bit angry, which is weird because the pattern is the same.

I think I like the soft maple as well. You’re a very talented scroller.

Sorry! I gotta vote for the soft maple….too much grain on the other!

When I look at the one with the plain soft maple I am drawn immediately to the pattern. When I look at the other I’m drawn to the wood. I agree with your wife.
