Making this for my daughter. We are surprising her when she comes back from spring break with a “teen” room. The idea came from the teen version of that store related to pottery and barns who had this bed priced at $700 plus a headboard. I said “I can do that same thing cheaper. And better of course. It made from 4 sheets of 3/4” MDF. roughly $85. some paint and some hardware, another $30. The cubbies will get baskets to store her “stuff”. Those were about another $100.
We are still upholstering the headboard. It basic, 36” high with an arced top edge. It will be flush mounted to the wall with key-slot hangers which I may switch over to D-ring picture hangers depending on how mounting goes.
Dimensions, sides: 60l x 18.5h x 15.5d, foot: 56l x 18.5h x 18d to fit a double mattress.
The second pics are of the spraybooth I setup in the driveway to paint these.
Like most of my projects the greatest expense is the new tool I buy. I justify that buy saying how much I saved on the project. This projects new tool was a Dewalt 1/2” compact cordless drill :-)
Finished the bed in time for her to come home….totally blown away. We were very happy with her reaction(she screamed) and She was thrilled with the new room

This is an interesting post. I hope you had help moving it in there. Four sheets of mdf are HEAVY. This gives her a nice bed and some needed storage. But I strongly suspect that she has more “stuff” than the cubbies will hold. How about some matching shelves too?
By the way nice move on leveraging the savings into a new tool. Keep this up and you will have your shop stocked up in no time. :)
Thanks for the post.

LOL, take a look at my too list :-) When my wife asked me to build her a dining room table I got a bandsaw out of the deal. She ended up falling in love with a table she saw at a store before i even started. I still have the bandsaw.

How did you fasten the MDF? Special screws? I know McNeelys has some screws specially designed for MDF, but I have never used them.
Good looking bed, too! I am with Scott; now you need some shelves…. maybe you can justify a Kreg pocket screw jig for that…LOL … just kidding.
God Bless,

Everything is biscuits and gravy….Titebond gravy. I suggest shelves to my wife, she said no, its just more room to collect “stuff”. There is one on the wall opposite the bed that is a hollow torsion box floating shelf. 10” x 8ft. The Kreg jig…..been looking. almost did it for this project but decided not to use screws. Its tough to justify the kreg jig on bowl projects too.
