simple box, but my first splines

Six board mitered box. Made of beetle pine. I had to reinforce the corners so I broke down and made a spline jig. These boxes are probably going to suffer some abuse (selling as hunting box). So I want it sturdy. Eventually I want to use all wooden hinges. But I need a quiet day in the shop to mass produce them. Just used a block stop for lid. My splines are mahogany. Mainly because I wanted them to be seen for this posting. I’ll probably use the Hophornbeam for splines in the future. The lift for the tray is Ash.

Thanks for looking

That is a fine lookin’ box. It’s sturdy, rustic lookin’, and will sell in a flash!

You did a great job on the splines and I like the way you did the tray handle.

Good job!!

I love it. Then again, I love splined boxes. I have a couple I need to build soon.

Those splines turned out just right. Add a pic of your spline jig as people always like those ( and then I can critique it!). I like the lift out tray and its handle is a cool design. If you plan it right, you can cut your top spline to protrude into the box and support your tray. Hunting box? Shells in the tray and dead varmits in the box?

Monte,

Tray handle is a good idea. Glad to see you made it to the spline club. With a dado blade you can make them wider on larger boxes. Have you considered mortising the hinges?

Really nice Monte. Those splines will stiffen it up nicely

I bet you will sell many of those. I like the rustic look, perfect for a hunting box.
