Fuji Valance

A friend asked me to make a valance for her window. I suggested adding a carving and she decided on Fujiyama. The frame and carving are made of cherry. I was able to find a piece with enough sap wood to give the mountain a sense of snow. The finish is poly.

Thanks for looking,

That’s what I like about the Japanese style, it can have decorative elements but they don’t overwhelm the “truth” of the material or the proportions of the piece.

Cal,

Beautiful valance. Love your work. A review of all your projects shows nice simple, clean and creative design through each piece.

Cal,

How nice. Symmetrical, simple, stunning…with your usual sense of style. This will only get more lovely as the cherry darkens with time and light heightening the contrast with the sap wood. Is the non-wood material paper, glass, plastic or something else? Thanks for sharing.

Boxguy – Sorry, I forgot to list the paper as a material. It’s actually a PVC coated washi paper that I import from Japan.

That is beautiful Cal. Very nicely done. The sapwood for the snow top is perfect.
