I recently made these shelves for my two beautiful girls. Tops are curly maple, support is regular hard maple, and the initials are cut out of Canarywood. I was going to inlay the letters, but thought it would look cool to apply them to the surface instead, to give it a 3-D effect. If I had it to do over again I probably would just inlay it. Trying to apply the finish (arm-r-seal) in and around the curves and crevices was a big pain.
