This is made from maple/birch hardwood flooring that my neighbours tore up and threw out. I glue it together with the tongue and groove and then rip it along the glueline, put it through the jointer and re-glue it (the only way to avoid wasting the wood where the groove is).
Joinery: handcut dovetails between the sides and the top, sliding dovetail to join the shelves to the sides.
I meant this to have 4 shelves, and mis-calculated when I cut the spacer. Oh well, guess I need bigger books…
Thanks for looking.

I was going to ask you if it was Birch due to the nice figure in some of the boards : )
Great little project ! Did you use a dye or a stain on it ? Looks good.

Very nice, great use of otherwise wasted wood.

Dusty56: the finish is BLO. Around here almost all older houses have mostly birch floors throughout – these were stamped on the underside “Canadian maple and birch” and I must confess that I’ve never been able to tell the two species apart.

Wow , The BLO really added some color to those lighter wood species. And here I was ready to compliment you on your staining technique : )
Yes , they can sometimes be hard to tell apart , but the giveaway is when you cut the wood. The Maple is almost scent free , whereas the Birch has a very pleasing aroma to it : )
So , Go ahead and sniff some wood today , you’ll be amazed : )
