Router stand for my shop…a jig with very little importance, but something I thought I should make. I’ll be grading myself on all my projects. With my equipment, I could have done better if I’d taken the time. The cheap pine was a poor choice…but worked. I repaired one crack with Titebond II. It was a chunk of 1 1/2” X 6” x 4’ that I’d had for 10 plus years…from tearing apart glass crates. It had some tear-out on the dovetails that could have been avoided. I used most all my shop machinery to make it: jointer, thickness planer (to 3/4 inch), table saw for length, Leigh dovetail jig, drill press with 2 inch Forstner bit and Delta sanding drum kit, bandsaw to cut the opening out to the edge and router with small half round. Finish is leftover Early American stain from years and years ago with satin spar urethane still wet in this picture. I’ll probably give it a second coat. Good practice for this old duffer. A C+ grade because with the same equipment a junior high kid could have done as well….probably better. Next project: table saw crosscut sled.

Kinda difficult to tell form the pics but did you make that with your Leigh jig?

The crosscut sled will more valuable than you realize even now. I’ve made several and they get constant use and are very accurate. You’ll love it.

yes, my Leigh jig for the dovetails…I used virtually every piece of equipment in my shop to make this little project…and that is exactly what I wanted to do…get some practice using my equipment. All my first projects will be that way until I build up a set of jigs and helps for my shop…my table saw needs a crosscut jig so I can make perfect cuts. And then on to a table saw finger joint jig…though I also have a Leigh accessory for that as well. One project at a time, Lee, just to get practice rather than use my best wood for the learning process.

Hi Barry,
This is a handy project. When I saw it posted I somehow I knew that you would work the Leigh jig into the build. You did a good job here and your practice is paying dividends. By the way I think you are being too harsh on yourself. We, as woodworkers, tend to focus on our flaws rather than our successes.
Nice post.

That’s a smart looking shop jig, and you get to use so many tools making it – nice job.

Very handy item.
Making shop stuff is the best way to practice with your tools.

Barry, nice job for the first project. I find that woodworking is not so much a learning curve as it is an evolution and melding of acquired skills. It’s not so much how the first project went as it is how the current project is going.
