Most people around here call this tree “Balsam Fir” but I am pretty sure it is more correctly a “Grand Fir”. When crushed in your hand, the needles give off a beautiful scent. This piece comes from a pretty big tree (2ft+ at the butt, 90+ ft tall), big at least by current standards. I chose an area where there were quite a few big branches all at the same height on the trunk, so there is a lot going on within the piece.
Grand Fir seem to get sick easily for some reason and some claim they don’t even make good firewood, but I think this bowl shows that one can make something pretty nice even from a lowly softwood.
