When I turned my big 2 ft bowl and had to really keep my costs down, I also tried the segmenting of horizontal layers, where only the bottom layer is a solid disk. In this case it was an outside piece of spalted Big Leaf Maple that would have been a pretty small bowl on its own, This bowl is 3.5” x 18.75”. It weighs just under 2 pounds – not much ! The dark wood is claro walnut, and the other ring is western white pine.

That is a massive bowl.
Great work.
You make me want a bigger lathe.
