The fireplace tile and mantel are finally completed. The fireplace is on the opposite wall from the room divider in my first project post. I again used quarter-sawn red oak and the same finishing technique described in the first project. I included a before photo showing the oakley stone veneer that came with the house. As you might imagine, the demo was a major part of this project.

Yes it is a significant improvement over the former and a job well done I might add. I like the contrast between the tile and the color of the finish. They compliment each other very much. The screen adds the finishing touch. I think everything fits together perfect!

The greatest part is that I didn’t realized it was covering the existing one, that’s a well executed job.

A beautiful job- very faithful to the arts & crafts style. That kind of sweat equity will really pay off! I never see quarter-sawn red oak around here- just the white oak. Did you special order it?

Good choice for red oak, how is the “grille insert” made, is it scroll sawed from a pattern and is it oak also?
Thanks
Michael

Thanks to all for the wonderful comments. I was lucky enough to find a woodworker’s “dream wood store” in Boise, ID. The place is called High Desert Hardwoods and it’s basically a big warehouse filled with stacks of rough sawn hard wood planks, both domestic and exotic. It’s run by some great folks that clearly love woodworking. They let you dig through the piles, they’ll cut stuff to rough length, anything you want. That’s where I found the quarter-sawn red oak.

I’d like to take responsibility for scroll sawing the detail on the grille insert, but it’s actually a cast aluminum grille from Reggio Register, a company out of Boston, I believe. The fireplace was retro fitted in the 60’s (I believe) with a “heatilator” style passive convective heating system. There’s a series of tubes above the fire box that connect to the front grille. When heated by a fire, the air in the tubes flows up and out the grille. Room air is then drawn into the system from vents on the sides.

That is a wonderful mantle. I really like the design and construction of it as well. I may have to borrow some ideas from this if you do not mind. I promised one to my wife for Christmas several years ago and I hear about it every year. You would think that she’d have forgotten about it by now?

thanks for the post.
