This is a finishing rack that i just threw together yesterday out of scraps left over from my printer table. since i don’t have a large assembly table i have to do all my finishing on a workmate with a piece of hardboard over it. since this is a small surface i can only finish one piece at a time so i made this rack so i can store pieces there to dry and start another piece. right now as you can see in the second picture i have a table that i am refinishing on it right now. the legs are poplar and the runners are pine.
To provide a nice smooth surface that the nice sanded pieces can sit on i finished the pine runners with 4 coats of poly and Cire wax (that’s all i had around). it makes a nice smooth surface and i added the birch plugs to cap the screw holes making a nice smooth surface with no screws of holes. you can see this in a third picture and i think they add a nice contract to the pine. i actually like the finish for the runners so much that i finished another small piece of select pine and added it to my library. although pine doesn’t stain well you can give it a nice color my adding wax after the poly. after this experience my next purchase will probably be some different colors and shades of wax.
Overall this project came out great and its something that anybody can easily throw together. there are no specific dimensions though. i just tried to get the most bang for my buck by squaring the corners on my smallest piece and setting up a stop block to cut all the pieces the same.

Great concept for those of us with limited space, I’ll add this on my ever growing woodworking to-do list (which obviously takes precedent over the other one that my wife likes to hand me!)
One thing I might do is make it modular so it breaks down and can setup for even larger depending on the size of the project (I think 4 levels is the highest I would go)

Nice work! You carry your craftsmanship through all your work whether it is a fine piece of furniture or something destined to be used and abused.
I’ve adopted the philosophy of Alton Brown (The Food Channel) that says everything should be a multi-tasker. I can see this finishing rack being a place to also store sized materials as you build a project. Or, holding materials waiting to be sized on the saw/planer/jointer.

Pretty good. When I have a lot of small things to finish I will usually hang them with a small nail and string.
It doesn’t take up much space and it gives access to 360 degrees of the work.

hey grovemadman. ya me and my dad are beginning to wire up some more outlets and he wants to get a silver one to match the junction box and the pegboard. i think i might head into the storage though and grab a white one to throw on it until he gets the right one. thats just the way my dad is with everything. he takes great pride in his work and has even come home and spray painted piece downstairs for his job so everything matches. but i will remind him tonight that we need one.
