First Bowl

This is my first attempt at a bowl. I carved it out with a chainsaw disk then smoothed it out with flap disks, orbital sander, and a lot of hand sanding. This bowl is a memorial to my grandfather who passed last week. I’ll give this to Grandma.

The wood came from a stump my dad cut out in southeast Kansas. It seems pretty old and has a lot of cracks. But, I decided to use it anyway. I have no idea what it is. Before finish, it was aromatic. Please let me know if you have any idea!

Great looking bowl! I was wondering how you cut those legs on a lathe till I read your description. Now it’s even more impressive. I’m sure your grandmother will love it.

First off, sorry about your Grandfather’s passing. Wonderful carved bowl. I really like the carved feet.

Very nice bowl. I like the way you did the legs with the “base” that “cradles” the bowl—very interesting compared to having the legs sprouting directly from the bowl’s exterior form.

Thanks for sharing!
