I took a course through Lee Valley the other night and turned my first wine stopper. It is made from Cocobolo and finished with Ultrabrite and Shellawax. This is a great little project and I’m sure that I’ll be creating more. :)

Funny how a simple object can catch one’s eye. I like this & must have a go at some.

Hi Ted,

This is a nice turning and I am sure that there will be more in your future. I have to warn you though these turnings are addictive. :)

Keep the posts coming. I really enjoy seeing turnings like this.

Nice top. Do you know cocobolo is highly allergic and can cause skin rash and breathing problems? As beautiful as this wood is, it’s kinda like cutting into poison ivy.
make sure you are well protected, wash your face and hands after turning and use your dust collector when turning/sanding this. The allergic delay can take up to a week or two so if you develop a strange rash soon, it may be this. I found out the hard way with this wood.

Yeah, they say there there are 2 kinds of people in the world – those that are allergic to Cocobolo and those that don’t know it yet :) It is too bad because it is such a beautiful wood to have such a bad rep. Thanks for the reminder.
