One Man’s Junk Is Another Man’s Treasure!
The old window was found in the ditch (one man’s junk) on one of my sister-in-law and my “road trips” to antique stores. I knew that, not only was it wrong for this trash to be left tossed out by the road, but also that it was going to be a perfect addition to my gardens (one man’s treasure), although I didn’t have a specific project in mind.
At first I thought maybe it would simply hang in the gardens, as a window to the view, but then I remembered Ken’s window hanging by his fence. See Ken's garden vignettes (seen at GardenTenders.com)
And so this creation developed. I cut some old, leftover pieces of cedar boards into lengths to create the box frame and shelf, attached the salvaged window with some old hinges found in a box in the basement, and then put a coat of shellac on it to help preserve it from the elements.
Inside there is a hockey figurine that my son received from a relative about 20 years ago, a fungus that my Mom painted a picture on (oh so many years ago), and a couple other pieces that had been sitting around the yard. The angel represents my daughter and the rooster – my country living.
The window box now adorns our shed, right beside where we hold our monthly family bonfire breakfasts.

Very nice “dumpster diving” find Deb. :) And a nice re-purposing of material. I like the way you left the window in its original condition. This is certainly a unique project. Your treasures certainly look as if they are enjoying the spring view.
thanks for the post.

If you had not saved this it would have been picked up by the road clean-up crew and dumped into the land fill and covered with dirt forever. Now it is standing proud on display. I think if I look real close I can see a smile on it.

I love using those old recycled window frames for decorations. I’ve got several around my house. Great idea and a nice “rustic” look.

Pretty creative Debbie!
It looks real nice on your shed.
You may have also prevented an accident by someone running over it with their car.
