My mailbox started out with me simply wanting to make a nice sign for each side with our family name and street address. I done that though and all it done was make my old plastic mailbox look even plainer than it did to start with. So I bounced around several ideas for a nicer, more personalized mailbox. I had settled on making the mailbox into a truck. Before I could start on that though, my wife came into the shop with a new idea. She wanted a unicorn on the mailbox. Oh well, as I always say, we have to keep Mama happy because, when Mama aint happy, aint nobody happy.
I used the same post my old box was on. I just painted it hunter green. Next, I started to make a wooden mailbox. I had another thought though and consulted the Post Office. I was allowed to do what I wanted, but the actual box had to be a postmaster approved regulation mailbox. So I encased all but the front of a regular mailbox into a wooden box. Then I made a unicorn head for the top of it.
The letter on the sign are routed with a palm router. Then the recessed letters are painted with exterior black paint.
The wooden box and unicorn head is made of cottonwood.
The round base for the head that sits on top is oak.
The horn is sicamore.
The hair is pine and mahogany.
The eyes and nose is mahogany and walnut.
Then everything is finished with five coats of Hellsman Spar Urethane.
In case anyone is wondering about the flag,
The front of the wooden box has a slot in it.
This allows the flag to be raised.
Also, I still like my truck idea for a mailbox. I went today and bought two more mailboxes. I now plan to make the truck and another idea I had for a mailbox while I was at the store. I hope to start on these soon. Someone will want them.

You will have all the postmen talking about your box. I like it a lot. I really like the way the flag works. NICE!

Looks great.
Since unicorns are “magical”, does it keep the bills from ever arriving???

Hey William, your mailbox is bloody fantastic. I”m pretty sure you will have a deluge of orders from your neighborhood all wanting one, clever advertising. :-) Put the mail carrier on commission for orders out of your neighborhood

That is really cool William! It would never survive in my neighborhood, teens with bats late at night and all:(.
Great Work! I particularly like the main!

Thank you all very much.
I am happy with the mailbox. I liked several of my other ideas as well though.
I think my best idea was a cannon.
I wanted to build a cannon with the end of the barrel being a mailbox.
Maybe install a camera and a way to expell items using air. That way I could see when the mail person put bills in there and shoot them back at her.

Great job William, how long will the unicorn mail box keep mamma happy? That’s the question :)
