Hello Everyone, this is a cradle I just finished building for my Granddaughter who will be with us very soon. I wrote an entire blog on it detailing the entire process which is located at:
http://lumberjocks.com/paratrooper34/blog/26455
The cradle is constructed of Butternut which was harvested in Western MASS. It is finished in Boiled Linseed Oil and paste wax. It was built almost only with hand tools, but I did use some power. Thanks for looking and enjoy the blog and pics.

Excellent craftsmanship. I like the accent of the layout line on the dovetails. Did you stain the end grain prior to assembly? The contrast is eyecatching.
Congrats on the grand-daughter. Love em up, sugar em up and send em home!

Thanks BTKS, much appreciated. I didn’t do anything to the end grain prior to finishing. Just slathered the whole thing in BLO and wiped it down. I was pretty surprised at the contrast as well. Not sure why it did that. Also, I like the look of the dovetail layout line as well. When I make the marks, I ensure my marking gauge blade is sharp and I make sure that is scores deep enough to still be visible after all the planing on the joint. I remember when I first started cutting dovetails, I was hesitant to leave that mark. But after a couple of projects with it left there, I really like how it looks. Now I leave it on all the time.

That has to be one of the nicer looking cradles I’ve seen around here. I really like the way you did the dovetails. You did a beautiful job of finishing it. Hope that you get to see a Great Grandchild use it too.
