This is a red oak shaker end table stained with a red mahogany and sealed with 3 coats of a wipe on poly. Joinery is pocket hole screws ( I know I know, this will be my last project with them). Plans from Canadian Home Workshop.

Nice! What’s wrong with the pocket hole fasteners?

Good Job. I’ve built a few very similar to this AND I used pocket hole fasteners as well. There is nothing wrong with using them on something like this. I also use the red mahogany stain on some of my oak pieces. I have also used a dark brown dye under the stain and it gives a very deep tone and takes some of the red out of the final color. Experiment with it and see what you think.

I’m just a noobie woodworker and the pocket hole screws seem to get a bad rap. I’m finding their place though and having a blast experimenting with more conventional joinery. Thanks for the finishing tips. I haven’t worked with much dye. Any books or websites you’d recommend?
