This Loon is handcarved from basswood, then painted life-like, then given several coats semi gloss varnish. He has glass eyes. He is about 12” to 14” long, and 6” to 7” wide and about 5” or so high. This is the same duck or bird that was featured in the famous classic movie ” On Golden Pond ”.
He deffinitely looking for a mate.
THANKS AGAIN FOR VIEWING MY GALLERY!

Dave,

As usual this is a beautiful carving.

Thanks for sharing.

35 years ago I married a city girl.

About 3 am the first night in our cottage up in the Maine woods, she woke me out of a sound sleep, “What’s that noise?” she asked.

I asked her what it sounded like

“woooo woooo” she replied,

I told her it that it was a loon, and went back to sleep.

She, on the other hand, stayed awake the rest of the night, waiting for the loon to stick its head through the front door—She had pictured it as a cross between a bull moose and a saber toothed tiger (maybe with a rhinoceros horn for good luck)

Later that week we were out in the neighbors boat, and I showed her what they looked like,

I will admit that if you didn’t know better the description fits the sound! The only sound similar that I have heard is the call of the Olympic elk. scary!

Beautiful job on the loon!

To me that is the sound of the north woods. I love the sound of the loon. You have done an excellent representation of the majestic bird. mike
