Wood Hinge Pocket Watch Box

Birthdays always give me a chance to get a little more personal with my woodworking projects. My brother-in-law is a fan of crazy and out there, so I have free reign! For this project I knew he needed a box for his pocket watch, so this is what I came up with.

I believe the brown-redish wood is Ribbon Mahogany (though if I am please correct me since I have more and it would be nice to know what I am working with). The edge banding is Zebra wood, which is really hard to work with cutting it cross grain as it becomes very, very fragile.

The hinge addition was a later add on. Though I always wanted to put wood hinges on it, the idea for purpleheart was to spice it up and give it some flare.

That’s a wonderful little box. How did you do the inscription in the lid?

Thanks for sharing,

Thanks Lawrence,
I actually completed this project before I had my branding iron, so the inscription is by hand with a little wood burner I have.

Very nice. I particularly like the hinges and the use of Zebrawood.

A timeless design (or maybe not with the watch in it). Good work Joshua and a thoughtful gift too.

Thanks for the kind comments.

Hillbillyshooter and Woodwrecker- I am actually getting to be a big fan of wood hinges, there is something so natural about them…other than the being made out of wood part!

Nice job on this box. The zebra banding looks tedious. I am a wooden hinge addict and I’m warning you, there is no cure! But they are really fun. See how many different types you can make.
