If this vessel looks a little familiar, it’s not really deja’vu… originally this piece started out being called 'coconut'

I wasn’t really happy with how ‘coconut’ was looking, so even though I had considered it a “finished” piece I put it back on the lathe to rework it. The changes are subtle, but I do think it is now shaped how I wanted it. This picture shows where I adjusted the shape.

Once I had massaged the shape to how i wanted it, I then applied 2 coats of ebony stain and a coat of tung oil to the interior. The exterior is finished with 8 coats of tung oil and two coats of paste wax. The bottom is plugged with a double layer og mahogany veneer and held in place with a segmented ring of black walnut.

“Cinnamon” as it’s now known is a gift for my mother (shhhhh… she doesn’t know yet!)

All comments and critiques appreciated.

Oh my.. that is stunning. Your mom is going to Love it. If you make another one, you could use wire and hang a weaved basket beneath for an interesting hot air balloon art piece or cool lamp. Great work!
