Made this frame for Valentine’s day for my bide of 22 years. Took the article from Fine Woodworking a few months back about a Greene and Greene pcture frame, and wanted to play with it a bit. I wanted to fram to have an old, antique, rustic look to it, and it was a good reason to play with dye’s and finishes.
The wood is plain big box store maple. I used an orange dye, and sanded it back to leave the dye only in the grain. Then I applied a weak terra cotta dye and lightly sanded it back. Followed up with amber shellac.
The heart on the frame is shallow carved, then I dabbed dark stain to the carving.
The picture, BTW, is photoshopped wedding and vacation pictures.
