this is a commissioned piece that i’ve been working on for a few months (off and on). originally they wanted a seperate desk and small side cabinet. due to space limitations, it was later changed to it’s current configuration. i think it turned out nice. the top has some curl to it which came out good when finished. the main parts of the desk are bolted together and it can be disassembled to make moving easier. it’s built in 3 parts, the drawer assembly and lap drawer/legs are bolted through the center apron. the top then uses hanger bolts to fasten onto the 2 lower sections once they’re assembled together. another note, i built the writing tray last. this way, i was able to use up some of the scrap i had generated. it gives it sort of a cutting board look. i think it looks good, plus i’m able to rotate the leftover strips so it acts like a quarter sawn piece.

fyi, the drawer pulls are circular, they just look wierd and ovalish due to the lighting.

Very nice job! I love your idea for the writing tray. I’m building a cherry built-in desk now and will be stealing your idea. :-)

What did you finish it with?

Beautiful work Bent. I tried to make it to the Wabash Valley club meeting in February for the turning demo but my schedule has been nuts. I have not seen the inside of my shop since January. We’ll meet up some day. Keep up the good work and thanks for posting.

paul – steal away! you’re welcome to any of my ideas, even the bad ones. it’s finished with oil based gloss poly the writing tray and top were also then waxed and buffed.

john – i’ve not yet seen the schedule for this coming year. it’s a good club and we’ve had some great presentations lately, hopefully you can make it out.

Have your say...
