My first attempt at a checkerboard. Maple and walnut. 2”x2” squares. Box dimensions roughly 2 1/2” x 16”. I added a 4” recess on 2 sides to get a hold of the top. Top just sits in the rabbeted box sides. Splines add strength and a little detail to the mitered corners of the box. I finished the top with laquer and the box with amber shellac. The look of the amber shellac isn’t my favorite but I only had enough laquer to do the top. I just made 1 1/2” squares for the checkers from some scrap. They are not in the picture.

Nice work and slick idea for storing game pieces.

Great looking checkerboard, I like the storage feature as well, nicely done.
