I had to fix a leaking porch roof, so I undertook the mission by designing a proper roof overhang (the roof was flush to the siding below it before.) I wanted to build small brackets, so I designed and built those from rot-proof cypress odd stock (roughly 2 and a half inches square.) I had to take the whole roof apart to build lookouts into notched porch rafters! Enormous work, good experience, but not sure it was worth all the effort. I also had to re-build an oversize non-functioning porch gate, so I built a high dog-proof rail and a narrow gate, heavily built for heavy use, thousands of door-swings since I built it, works and looks great! Paint finish includes sanding, sanding sealer, two coats primer and two coats exterior latex. Holding up great so far.
