A few years ago my wife was running a daycare out of our house. She needed a good table for them to play on, build on and draw on. Also, one that would allow the kids to play with the wood train set and not have to clean that up each day.
The table design is not unique, they can be purchased easily. But this one was made from a single sheet of 1/2 birch plywood, 1/2” MDF (for the top and bottom) and a couple quarts of paint. It was a day project and the kids really liked using it.
You can see some felt pads around the sides, it made lifting the top off a little easier because the top sealed itself to the base.

Nice looking table. You should be able to get a lot of use out of it.
Later you can add a hinge to the top and repurpose it as the kids grow.
