First Carved Jewelrybox Attempt

So, I have been watching Boris Khechoyan carve masterpieces for a while in the shop that I hang out in, and I decided to ask him if he would teach me to carve. Finished this just in time for my three year “anniversary” and I’m sure my girlfriend is going to be very happy!

His website, for those who are interested; the man is amazing at his craft, and I can only hope to be so good one day.

Edit: I came back to this project a few months later because the inside of the box was not all that useful as a jewelry box. I added some dividers and a drawer that slides on some ebony rails. I think it looks worlds better, and is much more functional.

Your box is beautiful. The carving looks like you’ve been doing it for years!

By the 3rd year though you’re supposed to be married.

It’s beautiful! I like the little interior touches.

But I would only put anniversary in quotes to your girlfriend if you don’t want a fourth. ;)

Fantastic work, esp. if it’s your first! I’ve got a rose with that sun ray motif; sure helps to draw the eye to the shell, doesn’t it? Your inlay is not too shabby, too! Guess I’ll have to try one of these things; it looks like fun!

Beautiful work! I would never have guessed it’s your first carving. But then, you say it’s your first carved jewelry box, not your first carving. I’m guessing you’ve been doing this for a while? :)

Wow, I did not expect so many responses! Thank you all for the compliments. Yes, this is the first project that I have carved, not just the first box. I did spend about 2 hours practicing on a piece of scrap before jumping in, so I could get used to the tools a bit. It was intended to be a practice piece but it turned out to be decent enough to make a fancy lid for and add some inlay to the sides when it was finished. :)

As for the comments about marriage; I hear you, I’m just waiting to get out of college!
