A Pair of Bookcases

I built a couple bookcases for my boys, they were in dire need of some vertical storage in their rooms. I wanted to design a bookcase that would be functional, so not only to have adjustable shelving but to include some small drawers as well. A lot of this project is constructed with reclaimed materials. For example, the shelving is solid birch from an old dining room table. The drawers are made from scrap 1/2 birch plywood. The back is 1/4” luan. This was important because at the time I built these I had just been laid off from my job of 23 years (back in 2009).

Instead of concealing the fact that the drawers are plywood, I decided to put the plys on display, and I have to say I really like the look.

It was a fun project to put together, and it was cost effective as well.

A measured drawing is available here.

Beautifully executed! I especially like the set of drawers for hiding miscellaneous items.

Nice looking piece. What color stain is that?

Thanks to all for the kind comments.

Martyroc, it was a Behr stain, Cherry. But Home Depot doesn’t sell the Behr products (at least not at my store). They used to sell a wipe-on poly that worked great, but that too has been discontinued.
